Preparing the soil
Ordering
Be sure to order early so you can coordinate delivery with the completion of
your soil preparations. Sod should be installed as quickly as possible after
you have received it, and ordering early will allow you to specify the exact
time of delivery.

Topsoil
For best results, cover the area with three to four inches of good topsoil.

Peat Moss
For light or sandy soils, incorporate two to four bales of peat moss per
1,000 square feet of soil to increase its nutrient and water-holding capacity.

Fertilizer
To give the sod a quick start and provide an even richer green color,
incorporate a complete lawn fertilizer (12-12-12 or its equivalent) into the
soil at approximately 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

Grading
After materials have been incorporated into the top three or four inches of
the soil, stones and debris should be raked out. Then establish the final
grade and rake smooth.
